Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Service Description

This discreetly modest vineyard with its roots in the same soil that gave life to wines in the Middle Ages, affords us the opportunity of sensing the spirit of place in one of Paris' oldest and most renowned quarters. The Abbey Saint-Gemain-des-Prés was one of the richest institutions of its day with vineyards extending in all directions. It produced an astonishing amount of wine, which was consumed by the residents of the Abbey, and also exported to most Northern European countries. The Square Félix Désruelles hosts Paris’ smallest vineyard. With only ten vines of Gamay from the Beaujolais village of Julienas, it can hardly be called a vineyard. But the modesty of the vineyard is more than compensated by the enthusiasm of its supporters and the history it represents. Julienas is one of the ten Beaujolais crus. Its fruity and lively wine comes from a black gamay with white juice, still handpicked. It has good body and when grown naturally and vinified properly, can be kept from 5 to 8 years. This walk includes a comprehensive tasting of wines in the charming, historic, Marché Saint-Germain. Seasonal vegetables, exquisite cheeses and rustic organic bread accompany the tasting. Includes
